The Deities of The Crooked Canyon
Fate
The creation of almost everything we know of date back to Fate; a mischievous and unforgiving goddess of twists and turns, events, and destiny. Everything that will or will not happen is decided and formed by Fate. She was the first deity to come into existence, and is the most ancient and well-known. Fate envelopes our world with an endless sky, filled with shimmering lights at night. Fate is often cursed or blessed upon by us when unfortunate or fortunate events come to pass. Some are too afraid to curse upon her, lest they wish to face Fate's wrath. From Fate came the Earth, Sun, and Moon.
Earth
Earth is among'st the most ancient of deities, and was tasked with bringing life by Fate. She is a chaotic, everlasting, unpredictable, and constantly changing. To bring a new life, she calls upon Fate to bring her a shimmering light, which Fate then casts towards Earth when the Moon dominates the sky. When each light reaches Earth, the goddess gives them a solid form. Sometimes, these shimmering lights can be seen streaking across the sky at night. When a cub or other is born mishap, it's thought that their light reached Earth too early or too late. Cubs or other born deceased are said that their lights hit Earth too roughly, and their lights died out. Others argue that their lights went out before they reached Earth.
For animals(specifically lions) to come about, they must have been created. Earth invited Sun's warm rays of light with each new day, and often looked upon Sun with admiration and yearning. From each ray of light and heat, together Earth and Sun created lions. The first to be born was Kuanzanza, a golden pelted lion with a heavy dark brown mane. His eyes shine as bright as Sun, and his strength was a blessing from Earth. As a gift, Fate gave Kuanzanza the ability to see in the darkest of nights.
One night, as Moon dominated the sky, the luminescent god descended upon Earth, basking her in showers of pale, cool light. To win Earth's affections, Moon plucked a shimmering light from Fate's skies and molded it with one of Earth's many rocks, creating the first crystal. Overcome with admiration for the mysterious god, together Earth and Moon created the first hyena; Kumaliza. Kumaliza was a inquisitive, deceitful, cunning, and dubious hyena. Her pelt bore the color of Earth, and the Moon speckled her pelt with shadows.
Sun
Sun is the most vibrant, spirited, and explosive of the deities. She dominates a portion of each day, warming Earth and bringing light. One fateful day, Sun was overwhelmed with envy for Moon, who she thought to have the biggest portion of the day. To have more time to warm her beloved Earth and shine light upon her, Sun forced Moon to stay away. This resulted in a wave of unbearable heat for life on Earth, and to punish Sun, Fate blew wisps of clouds into the sky. These clouds would block Sun every and now and then, keeping her from seeing or casting warm rays of light unto Earth.
Kuanzanza disliked roaming the lands alone, with no companion. Miserable, Kuanzanza begged for Sun to bestow upon him a companion. Sun listened to his pleas and agreed, creating with Earth the first lioness; Kiburi.
Moon
Moon is one of Fate's many creations, a male deity who is seen as mysterious, dynamic, and paternal. He showers Earth with a soft, pale light each night to guide each animal's way. Once, during a petty argument with Sun of who could shine the brightest, Moon was determined to prove he could shine brighter than Sun. One night, Moon plucked many shimmering lights from Fate's skies, molding them to add to his light. He stole hundreds of lights from Fate's skies, but shone brighter than ever('Blue Moon'). As punishment, Fate stole a portion of Moon's light each night(moon phases) until one night he shone no more. His light was returned, eventually.
Moon favored Kumaliza, but was puzzled as to why she was unhappy. Curious to know, Moon demanded Kumaliza to tell him. Kumaliza did; she was lonely, constantly prowling the night alone. Moon felt pity for his daughter, and pleaded Earth to create with him the first male hyena. Earth agreed, and together Moon and Earth created the first male hyena; Upweke.
